Teaching philosophy
My teaching goals are to meet students at their current level and help them cultivate the tools needed to become independent musicians.
All lessons will include work on basic fundamentals such as embouchure, breathing, tone production, and body efficiency. Lessons will also include reed-making assistance, including reed adjustment to help each student understand the critical role of the reed in creating deep, rich tone and communication of musical ideas.
I always provide reeds for purchase as an option for my students.
Students will gain experience playing technical exercises, scales, and etudes to improve overall technique and phrasing fundamentals. Solo repertoire will also be included. Students will also work on trouble spots in band or orchestra music and honor ensemble and college audition repertoire.
I am a strong believer in independent and creative thought. Students will learn practice techniques including self-recording and analysis as well as listening to recordings to develop musicality and artistry. Students will also learn how to effectively use tuners, drones, metronomes, and recording apps to their advantage.
